Alfred E. Taylor died Jan. 25, 2008, at age 89.

Author Hoch cranked out more than 900 mystery tales
Edward D. Hoch, a crime writer who was widely believed to have been the world's most prolific author of short mysteries, died Jan. 17 at his home in Rochester, N.Y. He was 77.

Chancellor stabilized Berkeley campus
Albert H. Bowker, a former chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley who was a stabilizing force on the campus after student unrest of the 1960s, died Jan. 20 at a retirement home in Portola Valley, Calif. He was 88.

Charlotte Mary Maas
Charlotte Mary Maas died Jan. 23, 2008, at age 77.

Don Jaques
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, in Rose City Funeral Home for Don Jaques, who died Jan. 24 of lung cancer at age 78.

Mildred Callahan Jones, who inadvertently helped launch a national craze for decorative flags with the handmade "It's a Boy" banner she hung outside her home in 1975, has died. She was 64.

'Flower Power' photo icon of an era
Bernie Boston, the photojournalist who captured the iconic image of a young Vietnam war protester placing a flower in the barrel of a rifle held by a National Guardsman, died Tuesday at his home in Bayse, Va. He was 74.

James D. Reed
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, in New Hope Community Church in Portland for James D. Reed, who died Jan. 24 of adult respiratory distress syndrome at age 64.

Joan L. Killorin
A funeral Mass will be at noon Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, in St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church (Madeleine Parish) in Portland for Joan L. Killorin, who died Jan. 25 at age 76. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in the church.

John Charles Lear
A funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, in Skyline Funeral Home for John Charles Lear, who died Jan. 25 of cancer at age 58.

John Henry
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, in Bateman Carroll Funeral Home for John "Jack" Henry, who died Jan. 24 at age 85.

Kenneth M. Furno
Kenneth M. Furno died Jan. 26, 2008, at age 59.

Larry Morris Farnand
Larry Morris Farnand died Jan. 23, 2008, of a stroke at age 58.

Lorraine Campagna
Lorraine Campagna died Jan. 16, 2008, at age 85. Lorraine Eissinger was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Medina, N.D., where she was raised. She was a homemaker who moved to Portland after her marriage. In 1949, she married Renald; he died in 2006.

Water boy found fame as kicker
Rooster Andrews, a diminutive man who stood tall in the annals of University of Texas football, died Monday in Austin of respiratory failure. He was 84.
