NEW ORLEANS -- It was supposed to be a proving ground, this seven-game trip, a chance to answer the few remaining questions about the Trail Blazers' surprise ascension to NBA relevancy.

• Pac-10 notebook Coaches sound off on John's termination
The big news in the Pacific-10 Conference this week was Oregon State firing Jay John as coach Sunday and replacing him with assistant Kevin Mouton for the rest of the season. Most Pac-10 coaches' reactions were similar to that of Oregon coach Ernie Kent, under whom John served as an assistant for a season.

We were watching a show on Fuel TV the other night about guys jumping dirt bikes in remote places they've traveled to in a big, expensive and chauffeured recreational vehicle. Half the fun, as they say, is the trip, which included cracking open what was definitely booze, most likely vodka, at 10:30 a.m.

• UO senate discusses arena but a key vote is delayed
EUGENE -- A lack of time prevented the University of Oregon senate from considering perhaps the most intriguing resolution of the five on the agenda at Wednesday's two-hour meeting on the school's proposed $200 million basketball arena.
