• Astronaut David Low became space industry executive
WASHINGTON -- David Low, a NASA astronaut who served on three space shuttle missions before becoming a space industry executive, died March 15 of colon cancer at Reston Hospital Center in Reston, Va. During his 12 years as an astronaut, he logged more than 714 hours in space while circling the Earth more than 540 times. He was 52.

Julia Vadala Taft, a former assistant secretary of state who coordinated the federal government's response to earthquakes, floods, famine and locust infestations in foreign countries in the 1980s, died Saturday at her home in Washington. She was 65.
