A big man's career that spanned an ocean
Nearly 3,000 miles from where he grew up in Boston with his father's name and, inevitably, in the long shadow he cast, Joseph I. Mulligan III had an epiphany as the two strolled through Dingle, the Irish town where the elder Mulligan co-owned a hotel.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, in Bethel United Church of Christ in Beaverton for Alan Bruce Ainsworth, who died April 9 of cancer at age 60.

Craftsmanship, not ego, shaped costumer's work
Edward Baker, whose breathtaking costumes enhanced the Boston Ballet's productions for two decades, died March 29. He was 65.

Elizabeth Hargrave
Elizabeth Hargrave died March 15, 2008, of a heart attack at age 73.

Ethel Payzant
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, in Canby Christian Church for Ethel Payzant, who died April 7 at age 95.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, in the auditorium at Willamette View Terrace in Portland for Helen Louise Lindsay, who died April 5 at age 86.

Irene M. Lowery
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home for Irene M. Lowery, who died April 10 of complications of Lewy body dementia at age 85. Recitation of the rosary will precede the Mass at noon.

A service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, in the Oregon Golf Club in West Linn for Janice Irene Tirrill, who died April 5 of breast cancer at age 66.

Joseph Castellano
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008, in St. Therese Catholic Church in Portland for Joseph Castellano, who died April 10 at age 95. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday, April 14, in Holman's Funeral Service.

Judith L. Kempton
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, in Triumphant King Lutheran Church in Lake Oswego for Judith L. Kempton, who died April 7 at age 57.

Literary house tycoon knew how to get a story
Simon Michael Bessie, who in 1959 left a top editorial position at what was then Harper & Brothers to help found Atheneum Publishers, perhaps the last major literary house to be started from scratch in the 20th century, died Monday at his home in Lyme, Conn. He was 92.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2008, in Macy & Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville for Ludim Aleman, who died April 8 at age 63.

Margaret Beck
A cryptside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2008, in Sunset Hills Memorial Park for Margaret Beck, who died April 10 of emphysema at age 85.

Miriam Silverberg, modern Japan scholar
LOS ANGELES -- Miriam Rom Silverberg, a University of California at Los Angeles professor emerita of history celebrated for her writings on modern Japan and known for infusing scholarly research with wit and humor, has died. She was 57.

Nobuko Lockwood
A service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, in the Beaverton Lodge retirement residence for Nobuko Lockwood, who died April 5 at age 68.

Oliver "Jim" Jensen
A memorial service will be at noon Saturday, April 19, 2008, in Abundant Life Church of the Nazarene in Kelso, Wash., for Oliver "Jim" Jensen, who died April 2 at age 77.

Robert E. Smailes Jr.
Robert E. Smailes Jr. died March 30, 2008, of emphysema at age 51.

Ronald Rick Miller
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, in Spring Mountain Bible Church for Ronald Rick Miller, who died April 4 at age 53.

Textile designer used clout to aid community
Doris Tillett, a textile designer who with her husband created hand-printed fabrics for some of America's most prominent decorators and also helped establish community-run textile businesses in depressed New York neighborhoods, died March 30 in Housatonic, Mass. She was 91 and until recently had lived in Manhattan.

Willard C. Schwenn
Willard C. Schwenn died April 6, 2008, at age 93.

William Howard Lee
William Howard Lee died April 8, 2008, at age 80.

Winifred Bell
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, in the Russellville Park retirement center in Portland for Winifred Bell, who died April 10 at age 92.

Yoo Her
A graveside service will be at noon Monday, April 21, in Crescent Grove Cemetery in Tigard for Yoo Her, who died April 7 at age 79.
