• A life spent in words: Lexicographer dies at 81
Laurence Urdang, a prolific lexicographer who had a hand in more than 100 dictionaries and other reference books, died Thursday in Branford, Conn. He was 81 and lived in Old Lyme, Conn.

• Del Martin spent her life pioneering lesbian rights
Del Martin, a pioneer lesbian rights activist who with her partner of more than 50 years, Phyllis Lyon, became the first same-sex couple to marry legally in San Francisco in June, died Wednesday. She was 87.
