Brooklyn Dodgers southpaw spitballer Preacher Roe, 92
Preacher Roe, the folksy left-hander from the Ozarks who became a star pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, featuring superb control and a spitball he belatedly confessed to throwing, died Nov. 9 in West Plains, Mo. He was 92.

Lowell James Andrew
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, in the Sunnyside Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Lowell James Andrew, who died Nov. 12 at age 81.

Mae Mercer sang the blues in Paris
LOS ANGELES -- Mae Mercer, a deep-voiced blues singer who spent much of the 1960s performing at a blues bar in Paris and touring Europe before launching an acting career back in the United States in films and television, has died. She was 76.

Nurse created U.S. hospice movement
WASHINGTON -- Florence S. Wald, a former Yale University nursing school dean who brought the hospice movement to the United States and started the first American hospice unit, died Nov. 8 at her home in Branford, Conn. No cause of death was reported. She was 91.
