Open Question: Why do the *UK* political parties say Country instead of UK? Top
Whenever I hear them talk, they talk about doing the best for the country.. Gordon Brown is saying on BBC news: "i'm fighting for the future of this country" what country.. england, scotland, wales, n.ireland? why isn't he saying Britain for the UK and what impression does this give to the rest of the UK outside england? Is it because they're London based parties and most voters are english by population mass, so therefore when they say country they mean England, and the rest of the countries that make up the UK doesn't matter? AND YET, all of them say they are NOT in favour of breaking up the UK and we're all better as staying the same. So, i'm confused.. can someone explain? Why aren't they saying UK? i don't get it. Are we referring to the UK as one country now? P.S. Gordon Brown was making his speech in the midlands, so he's not referring to scotland. Bunch of idiots on here. The UK is not a country, it's a monarch with seperate countries, that's why we have a union jack, and how many flags on the union jack, not one, but 4 :) hence, 4 different countries. so, can someone with sense answer my question

Open Question: Could Britain ever be great again? Top
The problem with socialism is that eventually they run out of other peoples money to spend ! what a great quote that is !. I now live in a country that i do not recognise anymore , in as little as 13 years under labour this country has changed beyond all reconition for me , and i am only 30 !, what must it feel like for people who are older god only knows?. i am emigrating this year to a country which still has morals and values that i was brought up with a child that this country used to have and exported all around the world , we were admired .Now for some reason we are left with nothing and the rest of the world looks far more appealing . I have come to the conclusion that the british people must be weak , they do not stand up for anything , just sleepwalk into more control and restrictions and freedoms being eroded . i am sick to death of keep hearing the british people are a tolerant society i don't think so , everything is supressed and one day something is going to snap. The whole country has just been left to rot , no investment the streets are filthy with rubbish . i am ashamed to invite my friends from abroad because the countryside near me has so much rubbish driving along the road is literally like a road built through a rubbish dump. And society in general you can't say anything incase you offend someone it has just gone out of control , i just don't want to live here anymore for me it is making me so unhappy . The advice i would give to anyone is make your money and get out while you can , because it seems that when you want to live in another country you have to have money to support yourself and not be a burden . but in this country you welcome to come in and claim as much as you can . fair enough if we had a 1st class heathcare system and education and enough housing and looked after our elderly with the respect they deserved , but everything is run on a shoestring now to top it off the icing on the cake we are saddled with uncomprehendable amount of debt , shame on all of the goverments who slowly sold this country off down the river and shame on all of us for letting it happen . They say you get the society you deserve .

Open Question: Caught shoplifting, what to expect from police interview? Top
I was caught shoplifting by an undercover shopper they saw my friend put something in her bag then asked us to come to the back of the shop, I asked if I could go but they told me to go with them so I did. We put out all our stolen goods and then the police came and got our contact information etc. We've been banned from the store and have to pay back the amount for the goods we took but I am attending an interview at the police station and have no idea what to expect from this... What will they ask? Will I just get a fine? I'm only 16 and I have truelly learnt my lesson, I am never ever going to do something this stupid again but now I'm freaking out about the police interview and if I say something that may be construde the wrong way or some such thing? The value was £44 but that's because my friend told me to grab it for her because I was in a better position, should I also tell them that? I genuinly regret my actions and it was never about the objects themselves but more about the thrill of getting away with it, I've been going through a hard time emotionally and plan on telling this to the police when they ask the innevitable question of, why?

Open Question: has labour got a secret pot of money to pay for jobs etc? Top
brown says there will be jobs. he refuses to say there will be cuts. how will he clear his immense debts? how can he say there wont be cuts in frontline services? labour voters believe all will be well under labour. who will pay? im getting into rant mode now. but im sick of people going on about how conservatives will make cuts as if they all think that labour wont.

Open Question: If Conservatives or Liberal Democrats win the Vote, we will witness the worse downfall since the 1980's...? Top
I am 18 year old young man, ive watched 2 of the television debates between the three parties, and i strongly stand with labour. All David Cameron has Done is tried to make the Labour party and Gordon brown look bad by "reminding" the people of the "Failures" the Labour Party have committed. It seems that the time leading up to the debate the conservative party thought that, "Lets make Labour look bad, because The Liberal Democrats wont win, so if we remind them of how bad Labour is, we'll win". That basically what Cameron has been subliminally telling me through these debates. Labour haven't be Good or Bad, over the last 13/14 years of Government. And they took over because people were un-happy with the Mess that the CONSERVATIVE PARTY made in the first place. The main issue i want to bring up is Liberal Democrats', "Amnesty for illegals" Policy. He claims that we wont be able to deal with the illegal immigrants and deport them as we'd like to, so lets just give them Amnesty and let them have a job. But the thing that infuriates me most is that they have to have been here 10 years to achieve this Amnesty. So all a Foreign illegal has to do is to hide somewhere in the UK for 10 years, without being detected by the Radar, and they get a job and cause more demand for houses!!! Labour is sensible and offers Jobs for Citizens, who are living in their OWN country, not like Liberal Dem. who are saying, "we cant deal with it, so lets get on with it" or like the Tories who arent even going to do anything about it. They wont cap the amount of immigrants, and they'll make not difference to the porblem!! A vote for Labour is a vote for Britain!! A vote for the Tories or Lib Dems is a vote for delusion, because their polices wont improve anything, they'll just talk about whats happening and look at it a different way!!! ALSO The Lib Dems. policy about Infant Crime. Theyve made up this fancy new policy that says, kids shouldnt go to prison, they should be put on an improvement scheme that makes them work, realise what they have done and return to society in a more reasonable fashion. Where as, if they were to go to jail, theyll just learn new tricks and committ more crimes. All Lib. Dems are offering is a chance for young criminals to stay out of jail, so instead they can pretend theyre sorry, and get on with it. Theyre just offering young criminals fast passes to committ crime again and stay out of jail so they can committ more subtle crimes. I know theres alot more to talk about, but i cant cover every topic, theyre just the main points i thought i'd bring up. You cant just say labour will do a bad job as they have done the last 13 years so lets go for another party just because labour are a bad one.

Open Question: Do you know who you will vote for in the election? Top
I am voting for the first time this year, and am undecided between Liberal and Conservative. I am a married woman (27) with no children but plan to start a family soon. My Husband and I both work full time and own our own home. Its difficult to work out who we would be better off under. Do you know who you are voting for, and if so, what are your reasons? I would vote UKIP if they actually stood a chance of getting into power. I know its wrong to feel it would be a waste of my vote, but I do. I dont want to risk another Labour government, and so feel the only option is either Conservative or Liberal.........unfortunately

Open Question: Had a promotion 5 months ago, Have still not been paid on my new Rate. Where do I stand legally? Top
I was given a promotion to a new role 5 months ago. I have been given a letter from my manager saying that my new position will start immediately and the amount that my salary will increase to. Come every pay day I had still not received my new Rate. I have told and asked my managers and their managers. They keep on telling me that It will be resolved. Its been 5 months now and still no Pay. They keep on using poor excuses but I honestly think they keep on forgetting to resolve this. Where do I Stand legally? I haven't contacted HR yet but this is ridiculous. Any help would be most appreciated

Open Question: So Belgium has banned the burqa, any ramifications for the UK? Top
"Not a single MP in the lower house of parliament voted against the ban on clothes or veils that do not allow the wearer to be fully identified, including full-face Muslim dress such as the niqab or burqa. There were two abstentions. Supporters said the law would help fight terrorism and grant rights to Muslim women." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/belgium/7653814/Belgian-MPs-vote-to-ban-the-burqa.html Daniel Bacquelaine, one of the liberal MPs who originally called for the ban, insisted the new law was "aimed at stopping people from not being identified". "It's not about introducing any form of discrimination," he said.

Open Question: (uk) Gordon Brown's 'bigot ' remark...? Top
In my own personal opinion, i think GB was justified in his comments he made about that little old lady. It's a shame the mike was turned on, because otherwise it would have just been another remark made in private (and let's face it, none of us can say we've never moaned about someone in private) But what's more, a small part of me thinks that maybe he'll win some support for his stance on immigration. to me, this woman just seemed to be another racist, and probably homophobic, elderly person (everyone has a racist grandparent) and so therefore deserves to be called a bigot. Atleast we now know he ISN'T a racist himself. Someone said: "You're a typical Labour supporter blindly following everything they feed you whilst knowing very little about politics or the state of this country." and i should be ashamed of myself? I'm not getting into politics mate, Lord-whoever you are, i'm focusing on the comment he made. I don't care about anything else right now, just getting at the hype the newspapers have made out of nothing. I don't care what some idiot from the BBC said becuase he's just one man, like me, with an opinion. opinion, does not = fact. You have a very aggressive personality, perhaps you are the bigot here?

Open Question: I am married to a British citizen, and we want to apply for further leave to remain? Top
We live a comfortable life thanks to my income. However we don't want to downgrade our lifestyle just to get the visa. My income comes from rent of property I own in my home country which us worth more than £500k. I don't have a job here because I don't need but my hubby does. As I've said before his income would be enough but we would have to move house something that we really don't want to. Is there any way my income can be taken into account by the home office? Thanks! I came here with a student visa to study a master, and then got married to him. That's why I need flr and not ilr as you pointed out. If the home office doesn't take my rent income into account we need to move house basically becaus my hubby's income is not enough to pay our current rent plus bills. My income is around 2/3 of our total income.

Open Question: For Americans,.....what does this short study mean to you? Top
Many around the World have accused Americans of being the most stupid People on Earth. This is NOT my opinion. I have many intelligent American friends and have the greatest respect for many American researchers in various academic fields. However,....after watching this survey,...it really is shocking what 'some' Americans think,...and how can this be remedied? What do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJuNgBkloFE&feature=player_embedded

Open Question: Can my friend make a claim? Top
my friend works for a very busy govt dept and went into work oneday, said she felt unwell and went to the toilets. She was found 1.30mins later when it was reported to her line mgr, nothing happened until a further 2.30mins when someone else found her and raised the alarm. The line mgr called a paramedic but my friend was in such a bad way she didn't know what was going on and stated that she didn't want to go to hospital she wanted to go home. She was eventually taken home by a work colleague, when she arrived home her husband called 999 and was taken to hospital where upon she was diagnosed as having septacemia. The eventual outcome was positive in that she survived however she had both legs amputated below knee, right thumb and extensive scarring. Her line manager made a comment that was heard in that he forgot about her as it was a busy time and he states that he thought she had got up and took up her post with her mentor. It was also reported that her mentor did not know that my friend was on duty or that he was expecting her.

Open Question: Since over 60% of UK immigration is non EU why has labour failed to reduce it? Top
"The Lib Dem leader claimed that 80 per cent of immigrants to the UK come from European Union countries and therefore cannot be denied entry. In fact, official statistics show that the proportion is less than 40 per cent. " http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/election-2010/7654278/General-Election-2010-Nick-Clegg-gets-immigration-figures-wrong-in-final-television-debate.html brianthesnailuk2002 many where I live, I would say only 1 in 10 immigrants where I live are EU. http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://thelangarhall.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/SouthallLRsign.jpg&imgrefurl=http://thelangarhall.com/general/southall/&usg=__DK1xlnEf9AZ6xHwSfVJzU5nUskA=&h=600&w=800&sz=55&hl=en&start=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=9ahFcaQOwczUGM:&tbnh=107&tbnw=143&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsouthall%2Bpictures%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DX%26rlz%3D1R2ADBF_en-GBGB336%26tbs%3Disch:1

Open Question: How many points would Clegg need to form a Lib Dem government? Top
I am interested to know from a political science perspective the following: If the percentage points of the national vote that he gains in this election (on top of his core voters last time) are shared equally amongst all constituencies (I know that is unlikely), how many points will the lib dems need to gain on top of 2005 to form a lib dem govt? (What percentage will they need to win). Sorry if my question isn't that coherent and thanks in advance for your answer/s. For the record I don't think it will happen I am just interested as I know the Tories needed an extra 6% over Labour to draw even.. Adam thanks for your answer: I believe this is how it should be. However as constiuencies have different numbers of people in this wont be the case in our voting system. please excuse the spelling. Will thanks for your answer. This is certainly more like the answer I was looking for. However my question was kind of hypothetical as I know that vote share is not going to be apportioned equally amongst all constituencies. Paxman or David Dimbleby recently showed a presentation that outlined the following: If a swing was uniform from Labour to the Tories the amount of constituencies that would go blue for each point. On election day (pre counting) there is often a similar analysis and they have the names of constituencies and they say for instance a "3% uniform swing would see the constituencies of such and such a place turn blue". Now I am wondering what the case is with the Lib Dems for them to get enough seats to form a government. Thanks for all your info though - some of it is helpful and I appreciate your in depth answer. :0)

Open Question: If the conservatives win the election....? Top
....."they will legalize fox-hunting, hare coursing, stag hunting, and kill our native badgers." I quote that from a video "Boll***s to the Economy!" Now I saw the debate, and I have to say I can't stand Cameron. But all that aside - some people seem to think the conservatives are right to lead the country. No one seemed to care much about all the animal slaughter that will increase if they are elected. Don't we have enough of that with all the meat slaughter houses, fur slaughter and animal testing?! This was just ignored at the election (correct me if I'm wrong about that, I missed the first half hour) and people seem to vote only for their own gain. Eg. *I'm poor so I'll vote Labour* or *I'm rich so I'll vote conservatives* and really the majority are ignoring the horrible things that will happen to our country if we are under Conservatives! Do we not care about anything further than our own back yard? Is it that we just want to bury our heads in the sand and ignore this abuse so we don't have to deal with it? OR are people really just that careless and heartless?? I know people, nice people, who are voting conservatives and it makes me sick - why do we not care about our environment???? If we keep abusing nature, soon we won't need anyone to lead us - there will be no country left to lead!!! Thanks to some of you... COnservatives are GITS who care only about themselves NOT their poorer neighbours getting equal rights to health care, they don't even care about anyone but the rich f***s! No, I'm not poor but I care about others! I am being blunt because bloody Cameron COVERS UP the truth by not answering questions directly! Some ones gotta be blunt!!! And if people are looking at me thinking "what a f***ing silly hippy" just remember your ignorance for the environment will pay off once we have destroyed the planet with killing, neglect and polution! Hey, someone mentioned animals being over populated so we should kill them. WHat about humans? We are by far the most over populated species, so if i took a gun and shot you all but said "Sorry guys there's too many of you. Bye bye now!" Is that ok??? Why the f***k do we have any power over any other species?? Humans ARE animals!!! Stop being brainwashed by the media!!!

Open Question: Is this the right way to make my UK election vote count as much as possible? Top
Current opinion polls give C 33%, Lab 28%, LibDem 30% In 2005, we had C 32%, Lab 35%, LibDem 22% So I look up 2005 voting figures, adjusted for boundary changes, estimate that one Labour voter in five will switch to LibDem, see if that gives me two clear front runners, and if so, choose between them. I can find the numbers I need by typing in my post code at http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/constituency/854/croydon-central That's http://www.guardian.co.uk/ politics/constituency/ 854/croydon-central (Looks weird, but that *will* take you to your own constituency)
