Anton "Tony" Schulz
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, in River House of Rood Bridge Park in Hillsboro for Anton "Tony" Schulz, who died Dec. 27, 2008, at age 82.

Donald Westlake, 75, of New York, considered one of the most successful and versatile mystery writers in the United States, died Dec. 31. Westlake won three Edgar Awards, an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay "The Grifters" and the title of Grand Master from the Mystery Writers of America in 1993. He also wrote under several pseudonyms -- including Richard Stark, Tucker Coe, Samuel Holt and Edwin West.

Berlinsky was cellist with Borodin Quartet
Valentin Berlinsky, for six decades the cellist of the Borodin Quartet, one of the most renowned string quartets in the world and by all accounts the longest continuously playing one, died Dec. 15 in Moscow. He was 83.

Bramlett a frontman for Delaney & Bonnie
Delaney Bramlett, a singer-songwriter whose bluesy, gospel- and country-flavored tunes were covered by popular musicians ranging from Ray Charles to Sonic Youth, died Dec. 27 in Los Angeles. He was 69.

Cartier put art to sci-fi classics and The Shadow
HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Edward D. Cartier, who illustrated classic science fiction, fantasy, mystery and pulp fiction by such authors as Isaac Asimov, L. Ron Hubbard and Walter B. Gibson of The Shadow fame, died Dec. 25. A decorated World War II veteran, Cartier was 94.

Clarence Norman Anderson
A service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, in Willamette National Cemetery for Clarence Norman Anderson, who died Dec. 28, 2008, at age 73.

Danny Dalzell
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, in Mt. Scott Park Presbyterian Church in Portland for Danny Dalzell, who died Jan. 1 of congestive heart failure at age 58.

Denise L. Minton
A funeral Mass will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Toledo, Wash., for Denise L. "Dee Dee" Minton, who died Dec. 27, 2008, at age 39.

Donald H. Newman
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, in Resurrection Lutheran Church for Donald H. Newman, who died Jan. 2 at age 87.

Ford F. Swearingen
A memorial service will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vancouver for Ford F. Swearingen of Quincy, who died Dec. 19, 2008, at age 83.

George Ray Pesterfield
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in the Gresham Seventh-day Adventist Church for George Ray Pesterfield, who died Dec. 6, 2008, at age 85.

Joan Mary McLean
A service will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in St. Stephen Catholic Church in Portland for Joan Mary McLean, who died Dec. 23, 2008, of cancer at age 53.

John Elroy Esch Jr.
A service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, in the Beaverton West Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for John Elroy Esch Jr., who died Jan. 1 of pancreatic cancer at age 67.

John G. Kegg
Recitation of the rosary followed by a Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, in St. Frederic Catholic Church in St. Helens for John G. "Jack" Kegg, who died Jan. 2 at age 87. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. that day in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Portland.

Jonna C. Purcell
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, in Skyline Funeral Home for Jonna C. Purcell, who died Dec. 29, 2008, at age 58.

Joyce Anne McLean
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, in the Cedar Hills United Church of Christ for Joyce Anne McLean, who died Dec. 28, 2008, at age 78.

June Anderson
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, in Holman, Hankins, Bowker & Waud for June Anderson, who died Dec. 31, 2008, at age 89.

Kevin G. Dromgoole
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan 8, 2009, in McMinnville First Baptist Church for Kevin G. Dromgoole, who died Jan. 1 of cancer at age 38.

Larger-than-life artist noted for bronze work
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Like other famous artists of the 20th century, sculptor Robert Pena Graham lived larger than life.

Lois Steinseifer
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, in Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Wilsonville for Lois Steinseifer, who died Dec. 30, 2008, at age 78.

Longtime Marine led three wars, wrote book
Retired Lt. Gen. Victor H. "Brute" Krulak, celebrated for his leadership in World War II, Korea and Vietnam as well as for his authoritative book on the U.S. Marine Corps, died Dec. 29 in San Diego. He was 95.

Lutheran was lifelong advocate of cooperation
The Rev. Robert J. Marshall, an ecumenist who in the 1970s led the Lutheran Church in America and helped pave the way for its merger with two other denominations, died Dec. 22 in Allentown, Pa. He was 90.

Lyle Arthur Darrow
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, in Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes for Lyle Arthur Darrow of Milwaukie, who died Dec. 28, 2008, at age 94.

Margaret C. Shafer
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in First Congregational Church in downtown Portland for Margaret C. Shafer, who died Dec. 22, 2008, at age 81.

'Mockingbird' director launched Witherspoon
Robert Mulligan, the Academy Award-nominated director of "To Kill a Mockingbird" who later helped launch the career of Reese Witherspoon, died Dec. 20 at 83.

Robert Walsh
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church for Robert Walsh of Wilsonville, who died Dec. 26, 2008, at age 88. Recitation of the rosary will precede the Mass at 12:30 p.m.

Rozann D. Austin
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, in Willamette Christian Church in West Linn for Rozann D. Austin, who died Jan. 1 at age 81.

Russell Atcherson
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in Oak Grove United Methodist Church for Russell Atcherson, who died Dec. 14, 2008, at age 93.

The case of the amazingly prolific author
Donald E. Westlake, an award-winning mystery writer who pounded out more than 100 books and five screenplays on manual typewriters during a career of nearly 50 years, died Dec. 31. He was 75.

Tom Bernard
A gathering will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in the Clinton Street Theater for Tom Bernard, who died Dec. 27, 2008, at age 60.
