Baseball historian combined his two loves
Jules Tygiel, a baseball historian and author who used the sport to illuminate larger issues of American culture and society, died of cancer Tuesday at his home in San Francisco. He was 59.

Charles E. Forrester
Charles E. Forrester died July 9, 2008, of congestive heart failure at age 61.

Dorothy Bose
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2008, in Finley's Sunset Hills Mortuary for Dorothy Bose, who died July 8 at age 87.

Douglas Ray Allred
Douglas Ray Allred died June 8, 2008, at age 84. Douglas Ray Allred was born May 10, 1924, in Provo, Utah, and moved to the Portland area as a child. He was a general contractor who owned Atlas General Construction. He also was a pilot. In 1948, he married Lorraine Wymetalek.

Eleanor Lillian Fass
Eleanor Lillian Fass died July 9, 2008, at age 88.

Elizabeth Anne "Betty" Pierce died July 11, 2008, at age 90.

Historian set new standard in field
John Y. Simon, a Civil War scholar whose mammoth effort in editing the papers of Ulysses S. Grant created a new standard for the organization of historical documents, died July 8 in Carbondale, Ill. He was 75.

Irene Chatman died July 11, 2008, at age 79.

James Joseph Barbagelata
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church for James Joseph Barbagelata, who died July 6 at age 52.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2008, in Hoodland Lutheran Church in Brightwood for Janet Ker Porter, who died July 8 at age 62.

Michael V. Watkins
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008, in Columbia Funeral Home in St. Helens for Michael V. Watkins, who died June 28 at age 44.

Multifaceted cover girl, former Revlon model
Dorian Leigh, who combined pristine blue eyes, curling eyelashes, an arresting intelligence and intoxicating sexuality to become one of history's most photographed models -- perhaps the first to truly merit the adjective super -- died Monday in Falls Church, Va. She was 91.

Myrtle T. Osborne
Myrtle T. Osborne died July 5, 2008, of a stroke at age 89.

Orville Edward Bong
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes for Orville Edward Bong, who died July 11 at age 83.

Ronda Westeren-Rise
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 20, 2008, in the Forest Hills Elementary School gymnasium for Ronda Westeren-Rise, who died July 8 at age 45.

Shirlie L. Brandon
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, in Macy & Son in McMinnville for Shirlie L. Brandon, who died July 12 at age 70.

Thomas Lee Dunaway
