A life of espionage and real estate
WASHINGTON -- A. Grima Johnson, a retired officer with the Central Intelligence Agency and its World War II predecessor who helped preserve an unspoiled view across the Potomac River from Mount Vernon, died Oct. 29 of pneumonia at his home in Charles County, Md. He was 89.

'Big Yank' tail gunner, crew hit Nazi targets
On a March day in 1945, 20-year-old Babe Broyhill found himself sitting exposed as the tail gunner on "Big Yank," a B-17 Flying Fortress in the skies over Berlin.

'Miracle Worker' playwright dies at 94
William Gibson, a playwright who had a gift for creating strong, popular female characters and wrote "The Miracle Worker," died Nov. 25 in Stockbridge, Mass. He was 94.

Vandeleur C. Caris
Vandeleur C. Caris died Nov. 26, 2008, at age 92. Vandeleur C. Caris was born Nov. 10, 1916, in New Washington, Ohio. He served in the Army during World War II in Europe. He moved to Lake Oswego in 1950 and was a conductor for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He also lived in Aloha and North Plains. In 1941, he married Catherine Miller; she died in 2004.

World's oldest person dies, in Indiana
Edna Parker, a former Indiana teacher who was certified as the world's oldest person, died Nov. 26 at a nursing home in Shelbyville, Ind. She was 115.
