Open Question: Haiti - American Church Members, Saviours or Child Abductors? Top
The news has just broken that many of the 'orphans' which were 'rescued' by members of the arrested American based, Meridian, Idaho, Church were in fact not orphans at all and have families alive and well and living in Haiti. The arrests had echoes of those of workers from a French religious charity who were arrested in Chad, in November of 2007. and subsequently convicted of kidnap. The arrests which were made as church members allegedly attempted to cross the Haitian border with the children who, it would seem, had with them no passports or documentation of any kind, a fact in itself which would have made repatriation of the children at a later date, as it was claimed was the intention, extremely difficult if not downright impossible. At the time of the arrests there was a great deal of anger in the U.S. and elsewhere in the West I'm sure, at what was widely regarded as poor helpless orphans being denied a better life in the U.S.A. Surely, if these people wanted to help the children then they should have offered help and support in Haiti. There seems to exist an arrogance particularly amongst some Americans but by no means exclusively so, about what is best for the poor of the Third World and in particular their children, which seems to be predicated on material wealth and right-wing Christian morals. These attitudes are uncomfortably reminiscent of those which prevailed in Great Britain in the late nineteenth century at a time when Christian missionaries travelled to remote parts of the British Empire to bring God and civilisation to the 'heathen savages'. More recently we witnessed, in Australia, Aboriginal children stripped from their families to be given a 'better life' with white families or in care homes, and more recently still, poor often slum dwelling English children around the time of WWII 'transported' to live with Australian families under the guise of war evacuation, but in fact this was done to bolster and add new blood to the Australian population. Sadly, many of both the Aboriginal and British children finished up physically and/or sexually abused. In very recent times we have seen film stars and wealthy celebrities such as the singer Madonna causing a great deal of controversy when they have bought their most recent little black, brown or yellow baby. In the case of Madonna, her P.R. machine tried to counter the negative comments, which abounded at the time, by pointing to the financial advantages that this 'lucky child', Baby David, would win by becoming part of his new dysfunctional family. Who the hell are we to make value judgements about the quality of life of others? I wonder what would be the attitude of the many Americans if wealthy Europeans or God forbid Africans or Asians were caught trying to smuggle poor children from the projects and trailer parks of the U.S.A. to give them a better life in their countries? - Actually no don't answer that one, but I'm sure you see the point that I am trying to make. Now I am not suggesting for one moment that true orphans who are in need of adoption should not be relocated abroad but these decisions should be made by the proper agencies, for proper reasons and following proper procedures which have built into them safeguards to protect the interests of the child and not by some rag tag bunch of religious missionaries who imagine themselves to be on a quest from their god or, worse, adventurers who see the children as a commodity which can carry a bounty of upwards of $10,000 per head. Saviours or Child Abductors, You decide?

Open Question: Can you claim self defence if you have used provocation to start a sequence of events.? Top
EG. if chased after shouting abuse at someone including threats of violence you then hit them can you claim self defence, what is the law concerning the issue i have tried to find something and failed, I know the case of Malnik 1989 in which its deemed by causing a situation you can't claim self defence would that apply here as the case is distinguishable from the question? Is there a relevant case or a quote from a judge that would demonstrate that in the events self defence is not an option? Sorry it appears ive not been clear say for example i shout abuse and threats at someone then they chase me and i hit them once and contine to run away could that be self defence.

Open Question: My friend has received a telephone call from the police saying she is being arrested with alleged harrassment.? Top
charges.. She is over 5 months pregnant and married with children. The woman who made the complaint has caused ongoing problems for the family but now herself has complained for harrasment. My friend is very concerned and worried being pregnant and I was hoping to get some advice to reaasure her. She has wrote a letter to the lady trying to patch any misunderstanding and pleeded with her to release the charges.. If the lady agreed (with a bit of hope she has a heart) does this mean my friend will not have to go through the process of arrest. She has been getting pains in her pregnancy due to the stress and I am worried about what effect this is having on her. I hope someone may be able to reassure her and provide some advice. Many Thanks,

Open Question: Is it easy to immigrate to the UK from Canada? Top
I've asked a more similar question before, but I really need help from someone with experience in the immigration field. So does anyone know who I can contact? I'm graduating high school in five months, and would really love to pursue a life in the UK. Is there anyone who knows the steps I have to take, the amount of money I should save, or anything I could do that would boost my chances of being excepted? I really, really don't like Canada, and I'd love to move to England. I know all about visas and such, but considering my age what do you think is the best plan for me?

Open Question: section 18 with intent? Top
On New Years Eve my boyfriend got in a fight - the person he was fighting with invited him into his home to have a drink a fight broke out between the both of them and the other lad jumped on him and latched on to his chin with his teeth - without thinking my boyfriend bit the end of his nose clean off - he got loked up that night but has claimed it was self defence as the other lad had bit him first (he had scar on chin) hes currently out on bail and has no pevious convictions and has a good job - we've since heard theother peron involved hadhis nose stitched back on followed by a small skin graft - the other person has also atmitted he had been drinking spirits all day and had also been taking drugs and he also admitted to the police he bit my byfriend so he didnt deny it!. We were just wondering what the minimum sentene would be ?

Open Question: How exactly does this cost money? Top
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8489894.stm forgive me if i'm wrong - but don't local authorities have teams which clean/fix/repair road signs, street lighting etc and i thought street signs were manufactured in prisons.. so where is the cost? (apart from supplying materials to hms prisions in the first place - which wouldn't be that much..) budgets are already prepared for the street maintainace teams - so they don't require extra -and why are the prisoners paid extra for manufactering them? surly is goes towards training/work experience and qualifications - they don't need paying on top. so again - where is the cost derived from?

Open Question: Should the government do more to free the middle-aged couple captured by Somali Pirates? Top
I'm not suggesting they pay any ransom, but maybe they should send in an SAS party, seek out our people, shoot the captors and make sure that the local population witnesses this.

Open Question: Should assisted suicide be legal? Top
I think, therefore I am. Is what I say, surely someone who is terminally ill, who is of "sound mind" should be allowed to choose when they want to die with the aide of loved ones. Those who assist in the patients final days should not be prosecuted. But what the heck is meant by a "sound mind"? Hitler had a sound mind - in the sense that he didn't have dementia. Is it only a matter of time before it's legalised? Like the way abortions were legalised in the 60s. Interesting read: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8490062.stm

Open Question: Would you legalise drugs - Yes or No? Top
Imagine how the crime rate would drop, then we would have loads more prison places for violent and sexual offenders. The money then spent on targeting the illegal drug trade would be better used elsewhere. In any event, I want to be free to do as I wish to my own body and not be dictated to by any government (left or right wing) who wants to tell me what's good for me. Edit Sal UK - Is it OK to drink and drive then or is is just drug drving you're opposed to. Remember, alcohol is legal but it's not legal to drink and drive. Same would apply to drugs.

Open Question: are BRITSH retarded? or just all of europe? Top
they are opposed to the missile shield the US just set up in the gulf to protect them. iran can strike europe with its medium range rockets not the US. why do we keep paying for the defence of europe when they clearly dont like us. should we let them fend for themselves or let them be razed to ashes if they choose not to have a shield. i read british comments on their newspapers and its funny. we build a shield to protect them and they hate us for it. whats with the hate? maybe they havent seen irans threats. the world is not full of daisies. when will europe wake up. we shield them too much. someone just said the british built the missile shield. always taking credit from the US. last time i checked the aegis system and the patriot PAC-3 was us technology.

hello, i am in the process of applying for a us work immigrant visa as i have accepted a job in CT. around 8 years ago i was cautioned by the police for kicking a car when i was drunk and i am concerned this may prevent me from getting approved. that was my one and only dealing with the police and besides that i have never had anything else on my record. i heard somewhere that after 7 years the caution is removed from your record so i was wondering if i still need to state it and also if anyone can advise on my chances of being approved based on this. thank you for your time i know i wont be filing my own visa they will do it for me however i want to get advice as to any problems that the caution may cause in advance

Open Question: When did the BRITISH start having morals? Top
was it after they lost their empire in 1997. the same people that enslaved a quarter of the world and aquired lands illegally. what was that saying, the sun never sets on the british empire. more like slaves of the british empire because most of the citizens of those countries had rights. believe me because my parents grew u in one an they share alot of horror stories. so why do they act like amarica is the big bad wolf? is it because their empire is gone? good riddance. and they have no say in world affairs anymore? they are cutting the army by 10% and 20 percent of its forces are unfit for service. their economy is in the toilet. who else is happy there gone? i am the empire ended with the hand over of hong kong. do some research fuckturd

Open Question: Who can be sued in these circumstances? Top
I was in W H Smith's this afternoon and saw a magazine for sale, called Wanderlust. It was in a packet saying "FREE JORDAN MAGAZINE INSIDE" in big capital letters. As anyone would (especially someone like me who has watched Celebrity Big Brother for the last month), I thought the promised free magazine would be about the famous hard faced celebrity with big boobs and expected to see lots of revealing pictures. After all, the magazine had the word lust in its title. However, when I got the magazine home and opened it the free magazine turned out to be about some Hashemite country in the middle east! My questions are: 1) Can I sue Wanderlust Publications Limited 2009 (the publishers) or W H Smith for misrepresentation? 2) Can I get my money back and does it matter whether or not I have read the magazine? 3) Can Katie Price sue the middle east kingdom for passing off as it is using her name? 4) If Katie does succesfully sue can I claim a commision of half of the damages she receives as it was all my idea? 5) Does Katie recieve royalties on all the hymns which mention her name, such as On Jordan's Banks etc?

Open Question: Is it unreasonable to expect members of a political party to agree with its principals? Top
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8485233.stm Or is it that wanting " the continued creation, fostering, maintenance and existence of the unity and of the integrity of the Indigenous British and of the government of our 'British Homeland'." is in some way illegal? We don't want to be invaded and displaced...is it a crime to even say it now? No Wolfie, they're not operating illegally at all, the judge made that quite clear at the last hearing. The proposed new constitution states that "BNP members must be 'indigenous British by descent or origin', or 'of any other descent or origin.' " The EHRC have now moved the goalposts, and want us to either accept that 3rd world invasion is inevitable, or be banned. Woodley, are you reffering to the new law brought in by Harriot Harmon, specifically to make the BNP's constitution illegal? (just before a general election.) I don't think the Labour Party do enough for white people, if the BNP made them illegal, you'd be screaming fascists! Apologies for the spelling mistake Shevek, but you seem to have avoided the question. A mixed up world may be inevitable in your view, but is it right to criminalise anyone who doesn't share your view?

Open Question: Temporary Contract - working notice? Top
I'm on a temporary contract with my current employer for the past 6 months. My contract states that I can give a minimum of 1 week's notice, and equally I can be dismissed with 1 week's notice. I know that I should be offered a permenant contract after 6 months where the notice period is 4 weeks. However, my boss isn't the most together person, and if I am like my colleauges I may not be offered this contract for several months. I want to keep my options open, and would like to avoid commiting to a permenant contract. If it is relevant, this is a minimum wage job and I am 21 years old. So I have 2 questions: 1 - if I decide to leave before I am offered a permenant contract, is it unreasonable to give 1 week's notice? Is this breaching the contract since I will have worked for over 6 months but still not have recieved a new contract? 2 - if I am offered a permenant contract can I refuse to commit? Would that result in a termination of employment all together? I don't want to upset my boss or screw them over, I ask because I am planning on moving cities but a lot of things about when this will happen are up in the air, so the less commitment the better, for me. Thanks!

Open Question: Why would someone vote labour? Top
Considering after a world boom all the UK has is massive debt and numerous broken promises. Very low social mobility, lack of social cohesion, massive discrepancy between rich & poor, over stretched public services, illegal wars that have claimed over a hundred thousand lives. If this is what labour achieved in the good times, what do they offer in the bad times? George fair point however the Tories never started any war in the 1980s. Please read a book or two.
