WASHINGTON -- With mortgage defaults surging and politicians urging the industry to do more, six lenders agreed to widen their effort to help borrowers of all loans -- not just subprime.

Mortgage insurer clamps down on its underwriting policies
PMI Group Inc., a Walnut Creek-based corporation, reported it would end underwriting mortgage insurance for those buying homes with less than 10 percent down in California, Florida and most of Arizona and Nevada starting March 1. It also will stop insuring loans nationally for homebuyers with less than 3 percent down.
