• Fee must relate to expense
Q: We charged some tenants a $500 cleaning deposit and a $100 pet fee. A year later, after they moved out, the cleaning expenses came to $300, so we returned $200, the rest of the deposit. We didn't mention the fee. Now the tenants are complaining that we should have spent the pet fee on cleaning before dipping into the cleaning deposit. Is that correct?
